It’s been revealed that 6.4 million UK customers switched electricity provider in 2019, an average of 12 switches per minute and a 9% increase on 2018’s figure of 5.8 million.
On average, over half a million customers switched supplier each month. April set a new monthly record, with 668,371 choosing to change supplier. December’s switching figures were up 12% on December 2018, with 519,343 switches recorded.
The figures, published today by Energy UK, show that small and mid-tier suppliers continue to gain customers from the ‘Big Six’, reporting a net gain of 1.5 million customers in 2019.
Audrey Gallacher, Interim Chief Executive at Energy UK said:
“With switching at a record high – with over 12 switches every minute in 2019 – it’s evident that competition continues to flourish in the retail market and customers are benefiting from new innovative products and services.
There are around 60 energy suppliers and the rapid market changes in recent years have now led to a point where we no longer have a ‘big six’”
